Batchwood Tennis Centre

Client Details:

St Albans District Council

Architect:

AFLS&P Architects

Project Description:

The original Tennis Centre was destroyed by the fire of August 2011. The new build Batchwood Sports Centre opened to the public in May 2014.
The £6.6 million facility provides a 48-station gym, strength and conditioning suite, 2 refurbished squash courts, six new indoor and two mini tennis courts. There is also a multi-purpose function bar, a coffee bar, a special judo dojo training facility and an education room, which is a LTA regional coaching and education centre of excellence.
The energy strategy entails exposed concrete slab for passive cooling, natural daylighting managed by a DALI lighting control system, wind catchers for natural ventilation, low energy lighting and photovoltaic panels on the roof.
VZDV was part of the design team and will be developing the full design to Stage D. VZDV was retained by the Client to oversee its completion.
