Harris Academy Beckenham

Project Description:

Planning has been approved for the development of a new Harris Academy in Beckenham. This project is part of the EFA Future Schools programme. VZDV was appointed by Kier for the planning application and detailed design of all mechanical and electrical building services associated with the project. The project involved the demolition of the existing school buildings (apart from the recently constructed sports hall) and the construction of a new Primary and Secondary School. The development makes use of natural ventilation NVHR for the majority of the building and mechanical ventilation MVHR to other areas. The natural ventilation strategy relies on using strategically located ventilation/light shafts, exposed slabs and night cooling to reduce the building running cost and environmental impact.  The building hosts an impressive array of roof mounted photovoltaic panels which will reduce the carbon footprint by as much as 25-35% (calculated according to Part L & The London Plan).
